Zen and Buddhist Art
A favorite subject of Zen ink brush painters, Gamma Sennin was a mythical Taoist immortal with a three-legged toad as his familiar. In this painting, based on an original Japanese print, the happy, homeless immortal is shown as a Zen tramp, a holy vagrant, at one with the Tao (the Great Way). He is dancing joyously in absolute freedom. The toad on his head symbolizes pure awareness or enlightenment. This was painted in the sumi-e style with traditional ink and brush.
