Chinese Dragons
This work is a metaphor for the interaction between a Zen master and student as they work together on a koan. (A koan is a subject of meditation in Zen Buddhism.) In Chinese culture and in legend, the dragon is a symbol of wisdom. In this piece I wanted to give an impression of enlightenment and transcendence, using mythic elements from a culture steeped in Buddhism. Both dragons are gazing at the flaming red pearl, which represents our true nature, unborn and undying, completely free yet encompassing all things. The old master (the blue dragon) is very familiar with the pearl and knows it cannot be grasped yet, in his great compassion, he wants his disciple to have an insight into True Nature.
