This painting is based on an ancient Zen “koan,” or subject of meditation. Working on a koan like "Bhaijang and the Fox" can bring about, within the Zen meditator, a deep insight into the true nature of life and death. The central mandala represents both birth and the birthless, while the fox skulls represent death and the deathless.
